Constantly Abiding – Eternal Security in a nutshell

Understanding the issue of Eternal Security

Lesson: For true believers only – You cant lose your Salvation as long as the Lord abides in you…

How do you know if Jesus Christ abides in you is the next question. Well we do know that already (God resisteth the proud and without faith its impossible to please God). We begin to study the text knowing that this book is under attack by scoffers who say its authority is to be questioned because they have all these ideas about the discrepancies in the Bible and whatever reasoning they have. But people question the Bible all the time, never really disproving it, but only to sway others from believing it. Anyhow, the book of 2 Peter is a very important book as not only does it echo the voice of other scriptures in the whole Bible about Salvation itself and other main doctrines of our faith, it also gives out warnings like the one where it says the prophesies in the Bible are not subject to any private interpretation.

2 Peter 1 –

1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

We find clearly that an entrance to the Kingdom of our Saviour Jesus Christ is open for those who firstly genuinely accepted Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord, and didn’t fall – a disaster that could only happen, as provided by the text, by neglecting to be diligent in making one’s election sure – these things needing to abound in oneself (faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and charity). Signs that lead to “falling” includes a lack of these things, then one becoming blind to the truth, and cannot see afar off or no discernment, losing hope, and worsely, one forgetting that he was purged from his old sins (ungrateful, no repentant heart, went back to sinning) see Romans 1:21 ~32 and 2 Timothy 3.

Now we get into the word abiding. Jesus describes the essence of the abiding that Peter talked about, its the ‘2-way’ abiding…note the words ‘bear fruit’, ‘continue’, ‘keep’, ‘remain in me’.

John 15

4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

A little insert in this portion of the reading since herein comes the Lord choosing you and what His will is for you from the beginning. You are to bear fruit and for it to remain because bearing fruit glorifies God. Read the parable of the sower where he tells of the soil with thorns and how the cares, pleasures and riches of this world prevents fruits from coming and the fruit that would have been there don’t come to perfection…In the next verses below, we see the same words saying ‘bring forth fruit’ and ‘fruit remaining’…that’s why the Lord goes on to say “Love NOT the world, neither the things that are in the world…” (see 1 John 2:15),  for these things choke the word.

16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

We find 2 other witnesses about abiding in the Lord and how the Lord abides in you…

1 John 2:27 –

But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

1 John 3:24 –

And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

Eternal Security in a nutshell…

1 John 2…

24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.

We need to abide in Christ like a branch abides in the vine, the vine desires the branch to abide in him so it bears fruit, but its the branch that trusts his own strength and self sufficiency (pride, lack of faith and lack of fear of God) that falls off the vine. Remember how the Psalmist wrote “the fool hath saith in his heart, there is no God”.

In summary, we can agree that its important to be found:

1.) knowing the Lord by reading God’s word in spirit and in truth all the time, this is the diligent ‘adding of virtue and knowledge to our faith’ (faith being the first step, its the sincere act of turning from sin and accepting Christ, trusting in His finished work on the cross that cleanses us from all unrighteousness), and;

2.) doing what He says in His word for all aspects of our short life here on earth.

Note: …And that’s also why the enemy will always try to sway everyone away from reading the Bible, he don’t want us knowing all this.
