Christian Method: Biblical Evangelism and Discipleship

With the throng of ways and means out there speaking about evangelism and discipleship there’s a lot to be said about them however a study of 2 Timothy 2 purifies a true believer’s approach and clarifies how God intended it to be. Down below, I list my learnings about it, so see if its true.

2 Timothy 2:

1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

5 And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.

6 The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.

7 Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.

8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:

9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.

10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:

12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:

13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.

15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;

18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.

19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.

21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.

24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

My learnings:

  • ver 1 – starts with standing by the grace of the Lord and stay strong on it. Understandably as its not by our own strength are we able to do this.
  • ver 2. – the first sign of our purpose: to spread the Word and teach others who can later do the same.
  • ver 3 – reminder: be a strong and hardy soldier in the service of Jesus Christ.
  • ver 4. – another reminder of our focus which is to please the Lord, not be diverted by the world around us.
  • ver 5. – do this service lawfully meaning properly in all aspects, in this case purely or ‘biblically’ thus showing a good example, being blameless, and stumble-free.
  • ver 6. – your study and response to God’s word will benefit you immediately or: before the ones you will be sharing it to.
  • ver 7. – and the Lord will give you understanding in all of it.
  • ver 8. – again a reminder: putting into remembrance who we serve.
  • ver 9. – be reminded that God’s Word is not bound though we may physically be.
  • ver 10. – we need to understand we do this that others may be saved – so we endure troubles that come with this service
  • ver 11-13 – we need to understand this doctrine in which we stand, that the Lord is faithful, our loss is gain in Christ .
  • ver 14. – remember: do not strive with anyone or try to win an argument having the last word in the discussion, but to gain others for Christ.
  • ver 15. – continues to instruct us to study to be approved of God, not ashamed but rightly dividing His Word. Again, we are to remain biblical, no heresy, just pure bible, you shouldn’t be ashamed of anything if you know its is written (and you got it right thru understanding).
  • ver 16. avoid profanities and vain talking it will only become more ungodly. No foul talk, no frivolous chatter.
  • ver 17,18 – avoid false words (unbiblical ideas and men’s words), they cause ‘cancerous’ problems which cause people’s faith to be overthrown. People nit pick on the mistakes we say and also stumble over them later.
  • ver 19 – in any case, know that God is still on the throne, departing from iniquity is the main objective of a Christian. If you cant win them, don’t sin with them.
  • ver 20-21. – we need to be vessels unto honor, purged and clean for the service of God.
  • ver 22. Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Be with like-minded brethren in Christ as much as possible, fellowship is essential.
  • ver 23. – reminder again: avoid foolish and unlearned questions, they bring strifes.
  • ver 24 – we shouldn’t strive but be always gentle, teaching and being patient.
  • ver 25-26 – in meekness we convince others that they may be rescued from their being lost. Being humble in front of people affects their attitude towards you and the message you deliver. I’ve proven that on the road while driving or simply at work sending emails.
